America In Bible Prophecy

GENESIS 22:15-18

THEME / LESSON: God keeps His promises and blesses individuals and nations that obey His voice.

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?” -Benjamin Franklin

This coming from a man who used to be a Deist. Deists don’t believe God intervenes in the affairs of men. He created them and just kind of lets things happen by chance. Seeing he quoted the words of Jesus in Matthew 10:29 Franklin must have seen a lot of things that changed his mind. Perhaps he became a Christian? Or perhaps he saw too many miraculous events helping America on her feet. Looking back from our perspective, is it even possible that the most powerful Christian nation in the world could rise without God having anything to do with it? Was America’s planting and growth a mere accident?

If we read the text of the Mayflower compact, that the early pilgrims wrote, we understand that they didn’t accidentally establish a Christian nation. They intentionally came here for that specific purpose. They wrote:

“IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith…Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid:”

The Articles of Confederation drawn up later began with these words:

“Whereas we all came into these parts of America with one and the same end, namely, to advance the freedom of our Lord Jesus Christ and to enjoy the liberties of the Gospel in purity, we therefore conceive it our bounded duty…that as a nation and religion, we in other respects, be and continue one.”

These were Christians of varying denominations uniting together in a political compact. America was founded as a political extension of the Church! Don’t tell me politics don’t matter. Don’t tell me America is just another insignificant nation among the table of nations.

Later on the Founding Fathers made an appeal to the Supreme Judge of the world, Almighty God, in the document known as the Declaration of Independence (See article titled “
An Appeal to Heaven on July 4th, 1776". In 1892 The Supreme Court declared America to be a Christian Nation. (See Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States). The high court stated:

“There is no dissonance in these declarations. There is a universal language pervading them all, having one meaning. They affirm and reaffirm that this is a religious nation. These are not individual sayings, declarations of private persons. They are organic utterances. They speak the voice of the entire people. This is a religious people…this is a Christian nation.”

On page 16 of a book titled
The Stone Kingdom – America the author E. Raymond Capt lists off a number of distinctions of America.

  1. No nation ever acquired so vast a territory in such a manner.
  2. No nation ever advanced to such a pinnacle of power in such an incredibly short space of time.
  3. No nation ever rose so rapidly in all that constitutes national strength and capital.
  4. No nation, in so limited a time, has developed such unlimited resources.
  5. No nation has ever existed, in which the foundations of its government were laid so broad and deep in the principles of justice, righteousness and truth.
  6. No nation has ever existed, in which men have been left to worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences.
  7. In no nation and in no age of the world have the arts and sciences so flourished, so many improvements been made for humanity, and so many great successes been achieved in the arts of both peace and war as in our country during the last fifty years.

If none of this is an accident, then where in the Bible is America foretold of in prophecy? Surely God must have foretold of such a special nation like ours. Well, we are going to read about 3 specific promises and blessings given to Abraham 4,000 years ago that appear to directly relate to America, possibly explaining the strange phenomena of this Great Nation’s appearance in world history.

Let’s get into The Word.

Genesis 22:15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

Genesis 22:16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

Let’s stop here for a moment and break this down.

By myself have I sworn- Hebrews 6:13 says, “For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself.”

It doesn’t get any more rock solid than this. God swearing by Himself and putting His own credibility on the line. God will not make and oath and then violate that oath. The promises of blessings He is about to speak will be upheld, and these things
will come to pass. It’s our job to figure out just how. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Because thou hast done this- We all know we are saved by the Grace of God through the blood of Christ but we are rewarded according to our works (See Rev. 22:12). I say that because it was after Abraham “had patiently endured,” that “he obtained the promise (Heb. 6:13), not before. His faith is what motivated him to bring Isaac up to the mountain to be sacrificed, but it was Abraham’s obedience that brought upon him the blessings and promises of God.

Obedience is so important!

What have you done for God? You know many people say, “I believe and I’m saved”, and that’s as far as it goes for them. They think John 3:16 is all there is to Christianity and they look down upon obedience as though it is some meaningless work of the flesh. It’s far from meaningless.

That’s like telling someone you love them but you never pay attention to them or do things that please them. I don’t know about you, but I want God’s blessings in my life. And I want those blessings to fall upon my family and upon our nation.

Remember this, true faith motivates one to begin walking but steadfast obedience completes the walk and brings blessings.

Hast not withheld thy son- Abraham was willing to give God everything. He held nothing back. Imagine if we had that kind of obedience and selflessness. America would be like heaven on earth - Heavenly Jerusalem. Unfortunately, our flesh constantly urges us to hold on tightly to what we believe is ours and whatever we have leftover we give to God. Whether that be time, energy, or resources. We need to resist those self-serving urges and be blessed like Abraham. It’s a struggle, and we won’t always succeed, but we can achieve great victories over the self-serving desires of the flesh with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Just a thought in passing, think of all of the sons that America has sacrificed in war to help other nations.

Genesis 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

I will bless thee- Not maybe, but “I will”. But again, it wasn’t until after Abraham passed the test. Don’t expect free blessings in your life besides the gift of grace and forgiveness. Obedience brings blessings! Obedience, obedience, obedience.

I will multiply thy seed- Not surprisingly the first promised blessing directly corresponds with what Abraham was willing to give to God – His only seed. Not only was Isaacs life spared but Abraham’s seed through Isaac would become many. The one that Abraham was willing to give to God will now multiply into millions!

Interestingly, when we
first give to others we often get back much more than we gave.

Christian businessmen refer to this principle as “The Law of Giving and Receiving”. I don’t know how to explain it, it just works. Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye met withal it shall be measured to you again.”

If you want to receive more, you have to give more.

But some say, “I don’t have anything to give. I’ll first wait for God to bless me and then I’ll give.” My friend, you’ll probably never be able to give then, because you’ll never have enough to give with that attitude. For until we give, we shall never receive.

Giving does not always mean something material. We can offer someone a compliment, a helping hand, a word of truth, a word of encouragement, prayers of intercession, etc. Everyone, regardless of financial standing has something to give to others and to God.

Interestingly America has been a
giving nation. In fact, it is still known today as the most generous nation in the entire world. More on this in a later section.

Stars of heaven- That’s a lot of seed! Interestingly in a given year one corn seed (kernel) can multiply into 600 kernels or more. In two years, that one kernel becomes 360,000. In 4 years if all of those kernels are replanted that 1 seed multiplies into over 129 trillion seeds!

Seeds are amazing things. And if blessed by God can multiply into amounts that are inconceivable. That’s the point God is trying to make.

Abraham’s seed didn’t multiply quite as fast as the corn kernel illustration, but it did however start compounding rapidly as this promise was passed down from Isaac to Jacob and to the 12 Tribes of Israel. When Jacob brought his family into Egypt because of the worldwide famine, Abraham’s descendants had already grown to seventy (Exod. 1:5). During their 215 years in Egypt (See “
How Long Were the Israelites in Egypt?") the Israelites grew into a vast multitude. Exodus 1:7 says, “And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.” So much so that the new king over Egypt who knew not Joseph became alarmed and said, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we” (Exod. 1:9).

You know what happened next, Pharaoh increased their burdens and kept them in hard bondage in an attempt to establish control over them. But this didn’t stop Israel from multiplying. For “the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew” (Exod. 1:12). Since that wasn’t working then Pharaoh commanded all of the Hebrew midwives to murder every male child of the Israelites as soon as they were born. However, the midwives feared God and disobeyed the order of the king. Then Pharaoh commanded his people, likely his own soldiers, to kill all newborn Israelites. You know the rest of the story, Moses was spared by Pharaoh’s daughter and ended up leading the entire nation out of Egypt.

Every attempt of Pharaoh to fight against God and His people backfired.

After they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years Israel conquered and settled the land of Canaan. Upon entering the land Moses says, “The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!” (Deut. 1:10-11).

How many Israelites left Egypt? What had Abraham’s seed multiplied into?

Exodus 12:37 says that there were about “six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.” So if we include the women and children many estimate that the seed of Abraham had grown to about 2.5 MILLION in a span of 430 years since the birth of Isaac (Gal. 3:17). Think about that. Just one seed blessed by God can multiply into great numbers.

How is your seed planting going? Have you shared the truth (Matt 13) with people you come in contact with? Is your obedience to God bringing blessings upon you and your family?

Now there is an interesting parallel between Abraham’s descendants becoming so numerous and that of the early settlers of America.

America essentially began with 51 survivors of the Mayflower who landed on Plymouth rock. In 1630 the population of Saxons (Isaacs Sons) in America grew to 4,646. By the year 1790 that population grew tremendously to about 4 million. By the year 1960 the Saxon population skyrocketed to 160 MILLION! Now of course some of that growth was due to continued immigration from Europe. Even still, the rate of American growth during this period is astounding. Even more than that of ancient Israel during their time of blessing and multiplying.

However, what makes America’s growth
parallel to the promises given to Abraham is not simply the numbers. China has a population of almost 1.5 trillion, but according to estimates only 2.3 percent of their population is Christian. China wasn’t founded upon Christianity like America was, it was founded upon the worship of the Dragon (Rev. 12). Everywhere you look in China you see dragons.

While some believe that America’s founders were biological descendants of the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel, and they make a convincing case for it. Nevertheless, because our Forefathers came with Bibles in hand to “Advance the Kingdom of Jesus Christ” their obedience alone, no doubt, caused them to be blessed like Abraham was. For the Apostle Paul says, “if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Gal. 3:29). In other words, ALL believers in Christ ultimately receive the promises given to Abraham listed here and in other chapters, in that they will get to live in New Jerusalem as citizens in the Kingdom. And they even enjoy these promises today spiritually as members of the Church. Nevertheless, the founders of America seemed to be the literal inheritors of the national blessings and promises given to Abraham.

Even ancient Israel, in her golden years under the reign of David and his son Solomon (1 Kings 14:21) pale in comparison to the blessings that have been bestowed upon America, as you will see when we continue discussing these blessings.

But I must say, if you are looking to the present day unbelievers who claim to be Jews (Rev. 2:9 & 3:9), or the small Israeli nation in the middle east as being the chosen nation of God, or as the inheritors of the promises given to Abraham, I think you’re gravely mistaken. In John 8 Jesus says that Jews who do not believe in Him are not truly children of Abraham. And in
Galatians 3 the Apostle Paul makes it very clear that only those who are in Christ are of the “seed of Abraham” regardless of physical lineage. And as pertaining to this blessing, “to be numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands of the sea”, the present-day people claiming to be Jews are not. They are not that numerous. They are very small in number by today’s standards. In 1960 the Jews population worldwide equaled only about 12 Million as compared to 160 Million Saxons/Caucasians in the United States alone.

You decide for yourself as we continue reading through these promises, whether or not they fit America or the so-called modern-day nation that calls itself Israel. One has been a blessing and the other a curse.

Possess the gate of his enemies- Back in Bible times most cities had walls and gates. It was at these gates that government business was done, international trade and commerce took place, and where the nation’s military forces would be. To possess the gate of your enemy is an obvious blessing of military might and economic strength over that of your rivals.

1 Kings 4 describes the time when ancient Israel reached the peak of its military power when in vs. 20-21 it says that “Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry. And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.”

These were the glory days of Israel!

Continuing on to 1 Kings 4:24-25 it says concerning Solomon’s kingdom that “he had dominion over all the region on this side of the river, from Tipsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river; and he had peace on all sides round about him. And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.” In other words, at this time Israel “possessed the gate of their enemies”. Their wealth and military might made them a dominant world power not to be messed with.

Tragically their glory days didn’t last long though. In all their prosperity and power Israel forgot the God who made all of this possible. They began trusting in themselves instead of in God and went astray after the gods of the pagans around them. Because of this God would punish them with a civil war dividing the nation in two, the kingdom of Judah and the kingdom of Israel. This punishment didn’t seem to faze them, both nations continued in sin and were later destroyed by the Assyrians and Babylonians and were carried away captive from their own land. Israel taken into Assyrian captivity (2 Kings 17:23) around 732-700 B.C. And Judah taken into Babylonian captivity (2 Kings 25:21) around 597 B.C.

After the kingdom of Judah’s seventy years of captivity, a small remnant returned under the leadership of Ezra and Nehemiah to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. This remnant remained in Jerusalem until 70 A.D. when they were destroyed as a nation again because of their rejection of Jesus as their Messiah (Matt. 21:6).

But what happened to the northern kingdom of Israel? What happened to them after being in Assyrian Captivity? They were never reunited with the kingdom of Judah and they never returned to their homeland. Did God cast them off forever? Was He completely done with them? Did they just intermingle with other nations and fade away from the pages of history?

Whole books have been written on this topic, so I don’t intend to go into great detail on the matter. However, the evidence is pretty strong that after the Assyrian captivity the Ten Tribes migrated north over the Caucuses Mountains and were later renamed Caucasians. They spread throughout Europe, later accepted Christianity and then ultimately traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to a vast Wilderness land where they would become the Greatest Nation to have ever existed upon the face of earth.

A nation whose mottoes are “One Nation Under God” and “In God We Trust”.

The characteristics of America and its parallels to ancient Israel are just too many to deny. If we are unable to match up the types and foreshadows laid out to us in the Bible, then we’re not likely going to understand much concerning Prophecy. Types are so prevalent in the scriptures. Isaac was a type of Jesus, John the Baptist a type of Elijah, a false female prophetess during the early church was called “Jezebel”, and on the list goes. Type after type.

Without question America has the most sophisticated weaponry in the entire world and the most powerful military force and power the world has ever seen. America controls the gates of her enemies, just like ancient Israel had.

According to “America maintains nearly 800 military bases in more than 70 countries and territories abroad—from giant ‘Little Americas’ to small radar facilities. Britain, France and Russia, by contrast, have about 30 foreign bases combined.” No other nation controls the gates of its enemies like America. Not even close.
Americas military bases

Of course, this prophecy of controlling the gates of his enemies can also refer spiritually to the church because Jesus said that the “gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). It also looks forward to the future Millennial reign of Christ when He returns to set up His Kingdom of earth, of which America is/was but only a type.

Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

All the nations of the earth be blessed- It appears the nations of the world around Israel at the time of Solomon enjoyed a brief period of peace and prosperity. People from all over the world, and kings, came to hear and benefit from the Wisdom of Solomon (1 Kings 4:34). “For God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Kings 4:30).

Today, kings and people look to America for wisdom and understanding. They want to copy the things we do successfully. No doubt because America is the leader in industry, scientific knowledge, and military technology. People look to America just like they had looked to Solomon.

Not only did ancient Israel provide the world with a great deal of commercial wisdom and industry but Solomon was well known for leading a
righteous government. A government that believed in equal justice under the law. In fact, Solomon prayed for this very thing when he asked the LORD to give him an “understanding heart to judge thy people” (1 Kings 3:9). God gave it to him and Solomon’s judicious governing was known abroad. For “all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment” (1 Kings 3:28). The words from America’s pledge of allegiance “One Nation under God with liberty and justice for all” seems to describe what it was like during the reign of Solomon king of Israel – A just and righteous nation.

However, the most important blessing that the seed of Abraham was able to bless the world with, was the Saviour of the world - Our Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 2:2). His teachings have the ability to change hearts and transform the lives of individuals and entire nations. And it is America by far that has been the leader in spreading the Gospel to the World. In 2010 America sent out 127,000 missionaries to other nations while No. 2-ranked Brazil sent 34,000.

Moreover, “The early pilgrims came to America with the Biblical awareness of God guiding them to an appointed land where they would form a nation with a divine mission to the whole world. Governor John Winthrop stated clearly in 1630: ‘The God of Israel is among us…We shall be a city upon a hill…This American destiny, under God, is at the heart of the attempt by contemporary Americans to understand their nations responsibility at home and abroad. Our responsibility in these matters is deepened because our Israel forefathers were the people with whom God made His Unalterable Covenant. Our Founding Fathers believed that America had been designed providentially for a special destiny” (p.19 The Stone Kingdom – America).

America has not only preached the Gospel to the world but it has lived out the Gospel by selflessly helping poor and vulnerable nations through financial and military support.

Obeyed my voice- Again, all these blessings came upon Abraham because he obeyed God’s voice. America became a great Superpower because of its righteous cause. The early pilgrims came here to live and obey the Gospel. Do you obey God’s voice? Do you study His Word and strive to follow it? Do you strive to be like faithful Abraham?

In conclusion, the promises to 1) multiply Abraham’s seed as the stars of heaven and the sands of the sea, 2) to possess the gates of his enemies, 3) and that in his seed would all nations of the earth be blessed, fit America perfectly, probably more so than it did ancient Israel under the reign of Solomon. Sure, ancient Israel had its glory days, but it was but miniature in comparison to the power and strength of America.

This isn’t to say that America doesn’t have its problems, we do, BIG ONES. Our land is full of iniquity. We tolerate Homosexual marriage, abortion, sexual promiscuity, and just about every other sin you can think of.

Don’t think this study was intended to minimize our nation’s sins, or to puff us up because of our blessings. This study was meant to help us recognize who we are and what our calling is. Individually and nationally we are to multiply, be strong, and be a blessing unto the world.

My friends, knowing our nation’s destiny and purpose is inspiring. It can motivate us to strive to live up to our calling. It can cause us to have a deeper appreciation for the blessings God has bestowed upon America. Instead of neglecting her as just another insignificant nation of the world, like so many do, even most pastors, we now have a reason to love her, fight to preserve her, and pray for her.

This, I believe would make our father Abraham happy, to see his children living out their calling.

God bless and be a Christian Overcomer!
