Standing Against Evil

Getting Rid of 'Strange' gods | Genesis 35

In chapter 34 we saw evidence of Jacob sort of letting his family get out of control by allowing his 13-15 year old daughter Dinah go hang out with the Canaanite women. And while she was out there she got taken advantage of by a pagan prince named Shechem. Fromm there the whole situation ended tragically when it could have been avoided had Jacob exercised a little more family discipline. Parental Neglect Leads to Tragedy | 34 Genesis

In the last chapter Jacob displayed great traits of a true Shepherd by his use of wisdom, humility, and gentleness which enabled him to avoid catastrophe with his long-lost brother Esau and saved his entire family from great harm. Shepherding with Wisdom, Humility, & Gentleness | Genesis 33

In chapter 32 as he was heading back to his homeland, Jacob got word that his brother Esau was coming out to meet him with 400 men. Being somewhat fearful, Jacob began to plan for the worst and pray for the best. Will Esau try to kill Jacob, as it appears to Jacob he may, or will they be reconciled to one another? We’ll soon find out in this chapter.

Also in this chapter we are going to see qualities in Jacob that we should emulate - wisdom, humility, and gentleness. By his use of wisdom and humility Jacob will avoid unneeded controversy and disaster. And by his use of gentleness Jacob gently leads his little one and his flocks to safety.

Let’s get into the Word.

There are some very interesting things that will happen in this chapter. Jacob will meet a group of angels, he will make a model prayer, and will even wrestle with God himself and get his name changed from Jacob to Israel. And if we want God to give us a new name, the blueprint for how that is done is given in this chapter. Read More…
