(Genesis 1:1-2) Jesus Shuts Down The Gap Theory In Two Verses

The Genesis gap theory is a major compromise that endangers the credibility of the scriptures, right from the very first verses of the Bible. Moses didn't teach it and neither did our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus shut the entire gap theory down in just two verses (Matthew 19:4 & Mark 10:6). We’ll examine those two passages towards the end of this writing. Let’s take a look at the first verse of Genesis.

Genesis 1:1   In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

When was the beginning? Was it approximately 6,000 years ago or was it millions or even billions of years ago? The answer we come up with depends on whether we take God’s infallible WORD as the authority on when the beginning was or whether we accept the fallible theories of men.

As Christians we had better be taking God’s word as our ultimate source of truth rather than scientific theories.

We are to “avoid profane babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith” (1 Timothy 6:20-21).

And I believe the “gap theory” is exactly the type of thing 1 Timothy was warning against. “Don’t let scientific theories concerning the age of the earth distort your view of the scriptures!” By the way, I used to believe and teach the gap theory. It wasn’t until a few years ago while doing my regular verse-by-verse studying that I realized it didn’t add up. There is absolutely no Biblical support for this theory.

Right now someone is thinking, “He doesn’t know about verses like Jeremiah 4:23-26, Isaiah 45:18, and 2 Peter 3:5-6”. Oh I know about those verses, I used to use them myself to try and prove the gap or “ruin restoration theory”. However, when I took a closer look at those passages I discovered that none of them support the gap theory. Every single one of those passages are ripped entirely out of context by the gap theorists in an attempt to prove the theory. Quite honestly I’m embarrassed that I didn’t see it right away because it’s very easy to see if you just let the scriptures speak without trying to bend them to fit a particular worldview.

Instead of just reading and believing the plain account of creation in its proper order a popular way to conform the Bible with man’s recent scientific theories of an ancient earth is to insert a gap of millions of years between Genesis verses 1 & 2. That way Christians can appease the pagan priesthood of Darwin - the father of evolution. They can now say to them, “Don’t look at us as though we’re ignorant of science like those young earth creationists dummies. We’re not crazy fundamentalists. We believe the earth is millions or billions of years old just like you”.

And this is how many Bible believers start accepting the gap theory. They’re shamed into accepting it. I mean, who wants to be looked upon as a simple ignorant fool who denies scientific theories now proclaimed as FACT. It’s much easier to find out a way to synthesis the Bible with the pagan priesthood of Darwin to avoid being made fun of than it is to stand upon the uncompromising truth of God’s Word.

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness” (1 Corinthians 3:19).

Christians had not adopted the gap theory until the late 1700’s in response to so-called “new” scientific theories related to the age of the earth.

In 1795, a Scottish geologist named James Hutton (1726-1797) wrote a book called Theory of the Earth, where he introduced the new idea (to the western mind at least) that the earth is much older than the bible dates add up to. Others built on this idea until it was very popular. In 1814, Thomas Chalmers, a Scottish theologian, sought for a way to fit great lengths of time into the Bible. He decided there must be a gap of millions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. His theory is known as “the gap theory” or the “ruin, restoration theory.” -p.32, What On Earth Is About To Happen. By Dr. Kent Hovind

Moreover, theories of earth being millions or billions of years old are not “new”. Ancient pagan cultures like the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Hindus all believed in an ancient earth as opposed to the Biblical teaching of a young earth being only thousands of years old. Later on many Greek philosophers like Plato borrowed these ideas of an ancient earth.

So we have two world views. The pagan view that the earth is millions or billions of years old, and the Biblical view that the earth is about 6,000 years old. And these views have opposed each other for thousands of years.

In fact,

The early Christian Church Fathers constantly argued with the pagans about the age of the earth, or about the age of civilization. They were unanimous that God had created the earth less than 6,000 years before they wrote. For example, one of the most influential, Augustine (AD354–430), in his most famous work, City of God, has a whole chapter, Of the Falseness of the History Which Allots Many Thousand Years to the World’s Past, where he says:

‘Let us, then, omit the conjectures of men who know not what they say, when they speak of the nature and origin of the human race. … They are deceived, too, by those highly mendacious documents which profess to give the history of many thousand years, though, reckoning by the sacred writings, we find that not 6000 years have yet passed.’ -

Bottom line. Christians adopted this new gap theory in response to pagan philosophies repackaged as “scientific theory”. It was a foolish compromise. And this compromise has inevitably led to Darwin’s theory of evolution being taught in place of creationism in our public schools and college universities. I guess the name sort of fits it well. This gap theory provided a “gap” for Satan to bore through. Give Satan an inch and he will take a mile. And he has done exactly that.

Exodus 20:11   For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

This verse by itself disproves the gap theory. It clearly states that God created the heaven and the earth in six days. It doesn’t say God created the earth, destroyed it, and then recreated it in six days. No, it clearly links the creation of the heavens and the earth of Genesis 1:1 with Genesis 1:2-31.

Exodus 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Same thing in Exodus 31:17, there is no gap between the creation of the heaven and the earth in Genesis 1:1 and the six days of creation. They are all part of the same unit. Genesis 1:1 was the first day of the week. That’s what the phrase “IN THE BEGINNING” means - the first day of the week. By extension “in the beginning” also represents the entire first week of creation. Pretty simply isn’t it.

Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

Now when I saw what was said in this verse I was blown away. I’ve read over this verse countless times but never noticed the significance of what Jesus did here. He closed the gap theory! Jesus put no gap between the phrase “In the beginning” and the creation of Adam and Eve. That means Adam and Eve were created “in the beginning” or during the first week, the week that started in Genesis 1:1.

If that isn’t enough for you then I’ll leave you with one more.

Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

In this verse we even have Jesus using the word “creation” from Genesis 1:1 and linking it together through to the sixth day when mankind was created. Once again, no gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.

We have much more to say about this issue. In our next study we are going to present more evidence against the gap theory by proving that Satan’s rebellion could not have taken place between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. It took place sometime after the first week of creation.
