Study the Word, Overcome the world

When Jesus Reveals Himself Unexpectedly | Genesis 45

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.”

-Revelation 1:17

All those who mocked him, ridiculed his name, and made light of his Word will surprisingly meet him when He returns. It will happen so unexpectedly, just as we are going to see Joseph unexpectedly reveal himself to his brothers who had treated him so poorly. My friends, we must be prepared at all times to meet our maker. Just think of how fast our lives changed because of the Coronavirus. That’s nothing compared to how fast our lives will change when Jesus returns.

We left off with Judah passing the test and putting the life of Benjamin before his own. And now we are going to see how Joseph responds.

Genesis 45:1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.

I want you to take note that Joseph was quite emotional about all of this, and since he is a type of Jesus Christ, perhaps it lets us peer into the emotions of “our savior” some. It is written that the angels sing for joy when one sinner repents (Luke 15:9), how much more joy must the one doing the saving have. Think about that. Jesus loves us dearly.

Genesis 45:2 And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard.

Genesis 45:3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

They were troubled at his presence- Joseph’s brothers thought he was dead, and yet here he is standing in front of them. You think this is dramatic, think again of the time when Jesus returns and makes himself known unto the world. Nothing can be more dramatic than that future scene my friends. And many will be troubled by his presence. It will be the last thing that they expect. In fact Jesus himself says:

“Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.” -Luke 12:40

Jesus will return at a time when no one expects it. Will you be prepared to meet him when he appears?

Genesis 45:4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.

One verse from Isaiah comes to mind. “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 3:5).

Genesis 45:5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.

Wow! Quite a statement. Joseph understood that his brother’s betrayal of him was a part of God’s plan. Many people equate this betrayal of Joseph to the betrayal of Jesus’ brethren of the tribe of Judah who rejected him. They feel was a part of God’s plan so Jesus could save the world, then come back and save Israel, like Joseph saved Egypt, then his Israelite brothers. The Apostle Paul even seems to draw from this in Romans 11.

“I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?” -Romans 11:11-12

Genesis 45:6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.

Hopefully, we’re not entering a 7-year economic famine. As I write, much of the nation is shutting down because of the Coronavirus. Some people believe we could be entering a second Great Depression and others believe it will just be a bump in the road followed by massive economic growth. I don’t know for sure, but I do know that nothing like this happened before in my lifetime. If we are headed towards an economic meltdown, we must still maintain the hope that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Take note. Joseph’s brothers were struggling through this famine for 2 years before Joseph takes them in and nourishes them. There were times when they thought they were going to die. Now, we’re not to that point yet, but it makes one think of the possibilities. If God allowed the Israelites to be tested then, what’s to prevent Him from putting us through some scary trial now?

Who knows, maybe we come out of this whole Coronavirus a stronger more-godly people. Maybe our economy booms even more like some are saying. There are a lot of unknowns right now. But we do have types in the Bible to draw from and we should be paying attention to them.

There are a lot of unknowns right now, but we have many types in the old testament that give us clues as to what is next.

My personal belief is that this Coronavirus helps us and hurts the globalists. I just see God moving against the globalists right now starting with the miracle election of Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton. I have a hard time believing God is going to bring us this far in the fight for America to have us turn backwards. I believe we’re going forwards in a big way. But I caution, that is only my personal gut feeling based off of my accumulation of Biblical types and examples. You must make up your own mind. And if you differ with me on this, no big deal.

Genesis 45:7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Man, I tell you what. There are a lot of people in this country who viciously hate President Trump. Even his fellow countrymen, though his stated mission is to make America Great Again. Who wouldn’t want that? Shouldn’t everyone want their country to be great? Shouldn’t everyone want America saved from the perils of globalism. Am I saying Trump is the savior? No way. But God can and does use people to fulfill His will. It’s hard for me to ignore that that may be happening now.

Genesis 45:8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

It was not you that sent me hither, but God- Part of the plan! God takes care of His own using mysterious methods. Don’t overlook that. We have nothing to fear, if God be for us who can be against us.

Hath made me a father to Pharaoh- In other words Joseph was given a high position in Egypt.

Genesis 45:9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not:

Genesis 45:10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast:

Genesis 45:11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.

There will I nourish thee- the land of Goshen was a fertile blessed land, perfect place to raise flocks and herds. God provided this place for them, even in the midst of famine. (Note: There is a famine for hearing the True Word of God today, but God has ways of providing for His own. Alongside the Evangelical fun houses God has provided us with few Joseph’s dishing out the unfiltered Word of God.)

Another thing comes to mind here. A prophecy in Revelation 12 says:

“And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” -Revelation 12:6

“And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.” -Revelation 12:13-14

Goshen was a land of plenty!

Just as God provided a place for the Israelites during this worldwide famine, God provided a country for the early pilgrims to be nourished and protected from the face of the serpent. To live in a land where they could freely live out the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I believe this eagle and this wilderness land foretold of here in Revelation have to do with America. I believe America is that wilderness land!

Just as God provided the land of Goshen for the Israelites during the world-wide famine, he will provide a place for us during times of trouble.

Genesis 45:12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you.

Genesis 45:13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither.

All my glory in Egypt- Though Joseph was despised by his brethren years ago, he had gained much glory among the Egyptians. They looked up to him and honored him for his wisdom.

Type: After the Israelites in the book of Acts rejected the gospel of Jesus Christ, Jesus gained much glory throughout the other nations of the world as they accepted the gospel.

Genesis 45:14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck.

Genesis 45:15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.

Such wonderful grace and affection Joseph shows his brothers, even after everything they had done to him 20 years ago. Think of all the grace our Lord Jesus Christ has shown us…

Genesis 45:16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants.

This Pharaoh was a good guy, he is so happy for Joseph.

Genesis 45:17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;

Genesis 45:18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.

Pharaoh was willing to provide the very best for the Israelites. But it was really God working through Pharaoh to get this all arranged. Are you worried about what’s going on in the world today? You shouldn’t be

Genesis 45:19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.

Genesis 45:20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.

Genesis 45:21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

Genesis 45:22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.

Three hundred pieces of sliver- 10 times the price of a slave (Exodus 21:32). And 5 is the number of grace. Just as Benjamin gets an extra blessing for not having sinned against him like his brothers did, those who stay true to Jesus throughout this life now, will get an extra blessing (See Revelation 15).

Genesis 45:23 And to his father he sent after this manner; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way.

Ten is also an interesting number. Later on we hear about the 10 Tribes of Israel who were separated from Judah and Benjamin. And ten is also the number of testimony. These gifts from Joseph were sent to witness to Jacob that he was yet alive!

Genesis 45:24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.

See that ye fall not out by the way- Joseph telling them to be careful and make it back safe.

Genesis 45:25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father,

Genesis 45:26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.

Genesis 45:27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:

Must have been quite the site! This would be like having Air Force One come to your house to pick you up. A BIG deal.

Genesis 45:28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

In other words. He now believes Joseph is alive.

Just as Joseph revealed himself unexpectedly to his brothers, Jesus will return and reveal himself unexpectedly, at some future date. Could be in 3.5 years, 7 years, or 1,000 years from now. The question is, will you be ready? Have you studied and applied the word to your life?
