Earn Your Crown

| August 4, 2009

“Making it to Heaven” is the answer many give when asked why they are a Christian. If that is one’s only motivation, they probably won’t make it. And if they do, they’ll most likely be naked (without reward) when they get there. But for those willing to stand and endure persecution for what is right, awaiting them is a “victory crown”.

For nothing of value ever comes easy. You must work for it. That’s just the way it is.

As the apostle Paul wrote:

“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible (victory crown). –I Corinthians 9:24-25

The effort put forth is worth it beloved, because the “crown” we earn is not corruptible like a gold medal in the Olympics or something like that, it is everlasting. You will keep it for the eternity. But like earning an Olympic gold medal, it takes discipline, motivation, and training to acquire,; including studying God’s Word chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse. You can’t win if you are lazy.

Besides, God doesn’t reward lazy Christians.

He rewards hard workers. You don’t get a crown for simply saying, “I’m saved, and I believe.” You must prove it. And when addressing the 7 Churches of the Book of Revelation (Revelation 2-3), Jesus listed off many rewards that will be given to those who “Overcome”, including a “crown”.

As it is written:

“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a CROWN of life. He that OVERCOMETH shall not be hurt of the second death.” –Revelation 2:10-11

CROWN- 4735. stef’-an-os; a chaplet (as a badge of royalty, a prize in the public games or a symbol of honor generally.) [Strong’s Concordance]

A victory crown was many times made from interwoven twigs or leaves from: laurel, pine, or parsley. It was then placed upon the head of the winner. Does this bring something to mind? It should. For it was this type of crown that our Lord wore the day of His crucifixion (Matthew 27:29). And though the Roman soldiers didn’t realize it, the “crown of thorns” they placed upon Jesus’ head as mockery, actually became His “victory crown”!

For He endured hardship, persecution, and heartache, as He stood for the Truth all the way to the finish line, the cross.

And through Him and by Him we also can achieve the victory. He came to this earth to set the example for us. He showed us how to live, how to act, and how to defeat Satan! And He did so without ever wavering or doubting, once. He was perfect. And you see, He wouldn’t ask us to endure anything He hasn’t already endured Himself.

As it is written:

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” –Hebrews 2:14-15

Now that is someone who can get it done.

So instead of barely making it to Heaven, naked, why not make it there with honor wearing a victory crown and receiving many rewards. I got news for some. The Kingdom of Heaven does not operate on Socialist principles; you get what you earn (Matthew 25:14-30). That doesn’t mean that you have to be perfect or that you are saved by your works. But you will be rewarded according to your works (Revelation 22:12).

So run with endurance, earn your crown, and be a Christian Overcomer!

God Bless,
Pastor Ben Heath
