False Teachings

| June 2, 2011

Satan is an expert at twisting the scriptures. He can tactfully quote verses out of context here and there in order to make it appear, to many, as though what he is saying is actually biblical. He does this by twisting the meaning of entire books, chapters, verses, or even just by adding or subtracting one little word.

Let us see how Satan misquoted and misapplied this verse from Psalms 91.

Actual Verse:

For He shall give His angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. –Psalms 91:11-12

Satan’s Quote:

“If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down: for it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning Thee: and in their hands they shall bear Thee up, lest at any time Thou dash Thy foot against a stone.’” –Matthew 4:6

On the surface it looks like Satan accurately quoted these verses. But after taking a closer look at it, one will discover that Satan omitted the words “To keep thee in all thy ways” and added the words “at any time”. Thus making it appear as though God will save His followers even if they are dumb enough to jump off a building to prove that God will protect them. But the verse actually means that God will protect you when you run into trouble, while following “His ways”, not “at any time” like Satan said.

Especially if you’re being stupid!

You see Satan was trying to get Christ to kill himself by jumping off of the Temple. And beloved, he will twist the scriptures in an attempt to destroy us as well.

But Jesus put this verse back into context by saying:

“It is written again, ‘Thou shalt not tempt the LORD thy God.’”—Matthew 4:7

Because to just jump off of the Temple to prove to Satan that God would protect Him would be considered as “tempting” the LORD. And of course we’re not supposed to do that.

This is an important example to take heed to. Are you able to put verses back in context when they are twisted on you? You know I truly feel that God allowed this example to be here so that we would know how to do combat with Satan, or anyone else twisting the scripture. I feel He wants us to be sharp enough to spot their error and be able to say to them:

“Hey, you took that out of context and here is why.”

Furthermore, if you go back and read Psalms 91 you will also find that Satan conveniently decided not to continue quoting on through verse 13 where it foretells of his destruction. As it is written:

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. –Psalms 91:13

I’m sure Satan chose to twist the scriptures from this chapter because he cannot stand the fact that it foretells of his defeat, and the power you have over him.

It is alarming that through slight of the hand methods of deception like this Satan has even succeeded in deceiving many, many Christians. And though they don’t realize it yet, the Jesus many think they are serving is actually the false one, because they are believing things like all we really have to do is just have faith, believe, be saved, and get raptured. That’s it. However the real Jesus teaches us to rightly divide His Word, be willing to endure trials and tribulation for standing up for the truth, and beware of the great deceiver and his methods of deception.

For Satan himself is transformed into (disguised as) an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed (disguised) as the ministers of righteousness. –II Corinthians 11:14-15

Beloved it is imperative that you study and think for yourself. It’s not enough to simply sit back and passively listen to me or any other Pastor. When someone quotes a verse here and there from the Bible, go back and read the entire chapter to be sure that the verses were taught in context. Otherwise Satan and his ministers could have you believing just about anything.
