Bring Your Bible to Church!

| June 3, 2011

All too often when I visit churches I see people strolling in without their Bibles. Isn’t the Bible the “one thing” you don’t want to forget when going to church? How can you learn God’s Word at church if you don’t bring your Bible?

I know some will say, “But I just listen to my Pastor read from it. He reads us two verses and then gives a 30 minute sermon.” Friend if you don’t have your Bible how can you know if the preacher is teaching God’s Word or not? You can’t, because if you don’t follow along in your own Bible you have no way of verifying whether the preacher is teaching God’s Word or his own words. Besides that, do you know how long it would take you to learn the Bible if you only read two verses a week?

A real long time. Much longer than you will live.

Getting the Bible back in church is critical. For in many of our churches the “Traditions of Men” have now taken the place of “The Bible”.

Just as it was foretold of long ago that this would happen:

“This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” –Matthew 15:8-9

Oh many of our people go to church and sing worship songs to feel good. But feeling good doesn’t score us points with God. You know if you’re just trying to make yourself feel good I know of someone who would be happy to help you. His name is Satan. And he loves nothing better than to pat us on our backs and make us feel good all the way to hell if we let him!

You see scoring points with God takes a little more than making ourselves feel righteous. Jesus says: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). He didn’t say, “If you love me all you have to do is go to church to sing worship songs and say, ‘I’m saved and I believe!’”.

We can’t fool God with mere lip service.

As Jesus explains:

“If a man love Me, he will keep my words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him. He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings: and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s Which sent Me.” –John 14:23-24

Again, it doesn’t matter how loud we sing, how much we pray, or how much we say that we love God. What matters is if we have a true relationship with Him. And that comes by study, prayer, obedience, and repentance. Not by performing religious rituals or following traditions of men (Hosea 6:6).

It’s time we stop playing church and get the Bible back in the churches of America. Feel good sermons preached by men, nor the traditions of man can save us, only God’s Word can. So let us shun all the nonsense and get back to the Word of God chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse. And if you go to a church where people don’t bring their Bibles, set the example by bringing yours, and perhaps others will follow.

God Bless,
