Thankful to God or Government?

| June 3, 2011

On the 4th Thursday of every year Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a time that we remember and never forget where our blessings come from. They don’t come from man. And they certainly are not bestowed upon us by an ever so generous and caring government.

They come from Almighty God.

The Bible and history tells us that governments always become a “curse” and not a blessing when relied upon for one’s every need. This is a proven fact. And if we forget this truth we may end up losing the blessings we’ve enjoyed for so many generations now.

Unfortunately over half of our people now have either forgotten or have never been taught this, and they put their hope and faith in BIG GOVERNMENT, thinking that “it” will just shower them with blessings like: free health care, free lunches, a well paying job, a house, and just about everything else they need. And boy are they going to be let down.

For:

“A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have.” –Thomas Jefferson

(For more quotes and writings like this one from our Founding Fathers I recommend reading the book America’s God and Country: Encyclopedia of Quotations. It is a valuable research tool)

We must remember that the whole reason America became a great place to live in the first place is because it was founded as “One Nation under God”. Her people read the Good Book and attempted to follow God’s Commandments to the best of their ability. Therefore God blessed them greatly.

As it is written:

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth. –Deuteronomy 28:1

My friend this verse can only apply to America. For throughout the history of the world there has never been a free nation so blessed and so powerful.

Our Father continues on:

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.

Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.

Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.

Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.” –Deuteronomy 28:2-6

Did you notice the word “if” there? Blessings will be showered upon us “if” we listen to His Word. That’s why it is so important to not only thank God for our blessings, but also to be obedient unto Him.

Because if we continue down the path of expecting government to shower us with blessings, we are going lose everything we have, including our freedom.

I will leave you with these verses to ponder. They are a list of blessings that God has blessed us. Think about them and compare them with the history and accomplishments of our great nation. And then continue on in this chapter to see the flip side of what specific things we were forewarned of that are happening today as a result of our national disobedience. After doing so I know you’ll agree as well, if you don’t already, that it is much better to trust in God rather than in BIG GOVERNMENT.

“The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.

The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.

And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.” –Deuteronomy 28:7-14
