America Downgraded?

| August 7, 2011

On Friday, the Standard and Poor’s announced that they have downgraded America’s credit rating for the first time in history. We were cut from a “AAA” rating down to a “AA” rating. But what does that mean?

It means that they believe we have less ability to pay back money we borrow.

In other words, they don’t trust us as much anymore. Because we are borrowing and spending way more money than we are producing. Just like if you were trying to borrow money for a house and the bank noticed that your household income was not enough to pay all of your debts. They wouldn’t loan you the money. Well with the exception of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But that’s another issue.

But not only does this downgrade suggest that we have less ability to pay our debts; it is also a symbolic blow to America being the world’s economic superpower.

And this is prophetic.

For in Deuteronomy 28, the chapter George Washington placed his hand upon when inaugurated as President, tells us that we obeyed God’s Word that:

“The LORD shall open unto thee His good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD they God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:” (Deuteronomy 28:12-13)

You know if we followed God’s Commandments we wouldn’t have to worry about a credit rating.

Because you don’t need credit if you don’t borrow money!

In fact, God has commanded us NOT to borrow money. He says we are supposed to be the lender not the borrower. And this is because He expects His people to be a light and an example unto the world (Matthew 5:13), not to be in bondage to it (See Proverbs 22:7).

Think about it. How can our nation be a great example unto the world when we can’t even take care of our own household budget?

We can’t.

And because we didn’t listen to God, the following things are happening today:

“The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high: and thou shalt come down very low. He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

…Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.” (Deuteronomy 28:43-48)

That’s a serious downgrade my friend. We’re being demoted to be the tail rather than being the head. But it isn’t the Standard and Poor’s that pronounces this upon us; it is Almighty God, because our people and our leaders have not studied or obeyed His Word. They rather mock it and belittle it as a thing of the past. So now the downgrade is happening before our very eyes.

Oh, if only our people truly took Christ at His Word, when He said:

“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32)
