Demons from the Abyss

| February 21, 2012

While a non-believer or an uneducated Christian may view demons from the underworld as something fictional, they are rather very real. So real that our Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles had multiple run ins with them, and today some extremely popular entertainers actually attempt to summons them! Did you see the pagan worship ceremony Madonna put on for millions of unsuspecting people during the Super Bowl this year? Boy with that many people participating in the ceremony, even though most unwittingly, I’d hate to know how many demons were called forth out of the abyss.

I can hear it right now. “But Pastor Ben, shows like Madonna and Lady Gaga put on are just entertainment, they don’t mean anything.”

My friend if you think people like Madonna and Lady Gaga are just putting on a show, you’re in denial, or you’re just willingly blind.

Madonna studies demonology. Not in the sense that you might think of someone who studies it so they can defend themselves against demonic attacks or to find out how to cast demons out of people, but she and others like her study it to learn how to call demons forth to them. She doesn’t hide this. Madonna is an avowed Kabbalist, and that’s what Kabbalists do. They dabble into spiritualism and the occult.

And if you don’t think her songs and performances are carefully planned according to various pagan and demonic rituals, well you’re ignorant. And if you claim to be a Christian and you enjoy Madonna’s songs and performances, then you’re just plain STUPID! (See article titled Madonna’s Superbowl Halftime Show: A Celebration of the Grand Priestess of the Music Industry)

How else do you define someone who says they love Christ but enjoy listening to a person who repeatedly blasphemes Him? (1 Cor 10:21)

What is the Abyss?

The Greek word for abyss is “abussos” and is translated as “the deep” in Luke 8:31 and Romans 10:7, and as “bottomless pit” in Revelation 9:1, 9:2, 9:11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1, and 20:3. It is used only nine times in the New Testament.

And when it is used we are not really given very much detail about it other than it is considered to be the “abode of demons”.

Other writings where you may find more details about the abyss are from some non-canonized books of the Bible commonly called apocryphal writings as well as from the demon worshippers themselves. However you have to be careful of the level of accuracy from apocryphal books and if you are not really solid in knowledge and faith I would not suggest reading anything from the demon worshippers. Their writings are often designed to tempt and deceive people into meddling with these wicked spirits. It’s very dangerous stuff.

The safest and soundest way to learn more about the abyss is simply to examine the nine different places where the word “abussos” is used in the New Testament.

We are Legion

I think the best place to start examining is probably Luke chapter 8, one of the only two places outside the Book of Revelation where this word abussos is used.

Let us read:

Luke 8:26 And they (Christ and His disciples) arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

27 And when He went forth to land there met Him out of the city a certain man, which had devils (demons) long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God most high? I beseech Thee, torment me not.” 29 (For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

30 And Jesus asked him, saying, “What is thy name?” And he said, “Legion:” because many devils were entered into him.

31 And they besought Him that He would not command them to go out into the deep (Gr. abussos = abyss).

From these verses we can gather that the “abyss” is not a place demons want to go to. In fact they consider it to be a place of torment. I’m not exactly sure what causes their torment other than simply not wanting to be locked up. But it does say in Revelation that when the abyss is opened at the sounding of the 5th Trumpet that “there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit” (Revelation 9:2).

Watch video about the 5th Trumpet

Does this suggest that there is some sort of fire in the abyss that adds to their torment? Or is this just a figure of speech or a form of symbolism being employed? I can’t say for sure.

But back to the demon telling Christ that they were “Legion”. Did you know that a Roman legion consisted of about 6,000 Infantry Men along with a Cavalry contingent? Interesting number isn’t it. It reminds of the number of the beast, “for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” (Rev 13:18). Some even speculate that the underworld has 60 princes, each commanding 6,666 legions, made up of 6,666 demons.

Rome only had about 25-35 legions of 6,000 equaling somewhere between 150,000-210,000 foot soldiers. But if these numbers are true concerning the demons, they have about 44 ½ million foot soldiers. That’s a lot of demons to be let out at the sounding of the 5th Trumpet (Rev 9:1-4).

Woe unto those at that time who do not have the gospel armor on for protection!

We’ll talk more about these things in our next posting….

  1. Steve Washburn says:

Dear Ben, I don’t usually watch football at all but i did get to see the Superbowl Modanna show. when I see these performances, I picture that it’s what it’ll be like when Satan arrives but much worse (a type if you will). I’ve met modanna. She does read the cabala. She asked me what I knew about it because she knows I study the Bible. I told her not much! I refuse to argue with her about anything. Can these stars be helped you think?

  5. Hi Steve, yes, I believe we should pray for many of these people. It’s sad that so many of them have sold themselves out to do the Devil’s work.
