Torment of a Scorpion

| March 14, 2012

Structure of the Book of RevelationFor those of you just joining us, we have been doing a series of written studies on Revelation 9. So far we’ve done:

In this article we’re going to talk about an extreme torment that many who do not have the seal of God will experience during the “five month period” of the fifth trumpet. Man I tell you what. I sure wouldn’t want to be around during that time without the seal of God protecting me. Because what we’re going to read about isn’t too pretty.

Let’s get into it. In Revelation 9 we’re told that:

4 There came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth; and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

5 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

6 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

7 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Analogy of a scorpion sting

Now we’ve already pretty much established the fact that these locusts are “evil spirits” who currently are locked up in the abyss awaiting their moment of fame (See Demons from the Abyss and Infernal Locusts of Revelation 9). But what about this “torment” that they are able to cause? Whatever it may be, it is obviously important because the entire focus of this fifth trumpet is about it. And in verse 10 it’s even repeated to us, for emphasis, that the locusts had “tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.”

For starters, it appears as though this mention of a “scorpion sting” is simply an analogy.

Have you ever heard anyone say? “I feel like I got ran over by a Mack Truck today”. Of course you know they didn’t really mean they were run over by a Mack Truck. They just wanted you to know how crappy they felt.

It’s the same with this analogy of the “scorpions torment”. God simply wants us to know what kind of pain will be experienced by many of those who do not have the seal of God during the time of the fifth trumpet.

They will feel as though they were stung by a poisonous scorpion!

The effects of a literal scorpion sting

A Scorpion Barb

This is the tip of a scorpion “stinger”.

But what does it feel like to get stung by a scorpion? Well it depends what kind of a scorpion stings you. According to an article published by Medscape.com,

Out of 1500 scorpion species, 50 are dangerous to humans. Scorpion stings cause a wide range of conditions, from severe local skin reactions to neurologic, respiratory, and cardiovascular collapse. -Scorpion Envenomation,   August 29, 2011

In addition to that, they may cause other symptoms such as:

  • Rapid breathing
  • High blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Muscle twitching
  • Weakness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe convulsions & etc.

Needless to say, getting stung by scorpions that are harmful to humans would pretty much suck. It’s no wonder why God announced the events in this fifth trumpet as one of the “Three Great Woes” that are to come upon the earth (See Rev 8:13 & 9:12).

A future wilderness period

Perhaps now we can have a greater appreciation for the protection God provided the Israelites when they traveled through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land. For it was said that God led them “through the great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water” (Deut 8:15).

However, there is another terrible wilderness period coming when we are going to need our Heavenly Father’s protection once again, just like the Israelites of old did. Except this time we’ll need to be protected from different kinds of scorpions and serpents, a more dangerous kind, ones that are spiritual in nature (See Rev 12:14 & Psalms 91). And it sure looks like we are getting close to that time.

Demonic Torments

A man being tormented by demons.

A depiction of a man being “tormented” by demons. Demons are very sadistic in nature, they enjoy watching mankind suffer.

But anyways, “What else, other than a literal scorpion sting, could cause this kind of pain?”

Well. It just so happens that there are “demonically possessed people” who experience many of the same symptoms as a person who gets stung by a scorpion; like convulsions, twitching, extreme anxiety, and other un-pleasantries.

In some cases, demonically possessed people experiencing “torments” similar to these would rather just die than continue feeling like they do. Just like the man who was possessed with a legion of evil spirits. For he was in so much torment that he wandered around night and day, “in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones” (Mark 5:5).

He just wanted to get these things out of him! And when Jesus cast them out of him and into a herd of pigs, the whole herd then “ran violently down a steep place into the sea” (Mark 5:13). That tells you something if even the pigs would rather die than be possessed by these tormenting spirits.

With this in view, it now makes perfect sense why it says in Revelation 9:6 that:

“In those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.”

The people affected by the torment of Revelation 9 will be in so much pain that they too will just want to die!

And another Biblical case where demons had a profound physical impact upon a person was the woman whom Christ healed that had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself” (Luke 13:11-16).

Now of course not all people with illnesses or diseases are demonically possessed. In fact, most are not. Nevertheless demons are responsible for some.

Conclusion

Based upon the evidence provided by the scriptures referenced in this article, and others throughout the rest of the Bible, I believe the “severe torment” described to us in the fifth trumpet is caused by an outpouring of demonic infestation like never seen before. And I feel the description given to us in Revelation 9 of locusts with scorpion stingers is simply God’s way of illustrating this fact to us. You know, the world will probably just perceive this as some sort of great plague when it happens, but if you live to see it, you will know exactly what’s going on. You’ll know because you studied Revelation 9.

But the good news is that if you have the seal of God, you don’t have to worry about any of this. For:

There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet (Psalms 91:10-13).

We’re moving towards those times. Be sure to pray everyday for that seal of protection and be a Christian Overcomer!

Pastor Ben Heath
