Woman representing Wisdom in public areas from Proverbs 8, calling out at the city gates.

Wisdom Revealed as Jesus and the True Church

Posted on by Pastor Ben Heath

Proverbs 8:1-34

Previously in the last chapter, we met the adulterous woman—a symbol of the apostate church, luring souls with her deceptive, seductive ways. Now, in Proverbs 8, Wisdom stands pure and bold, proclaiming truth for all to hear! Unlike that scheming seductress who exploits the lost for her wicked gain, Wisdom, the true Church, offers hope to the lost, yearning to save them. This stark contrast demands a choice: will you fall for Satan’s lies or embrace God’s divine truth?

Let’s dive into Proverbs 8 and strive to live Wisdom’s righteousness today!

Wisdom’s Public Call (1-4)

Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. -Proverbs 8:1-4

High places, gates: Wisdom cries out in the most prominent public places, pleading with people to listen. Her warnings are everywhere—open your ears! In our day, those public squares include social media, where truth battles Satan’s lies daily.

Wisdom’s cry: Wisdom has nothing to hide, no reason to conceal her intentions. Unlike the adulterous woman cloaking her evil, Wisdom is open, honest, and bold! She’s no seductress; she’s a watchman, warning you to flee the devil’s traps. She speaks through God’s people, boldly proclaiming her truth in public squares. Think of the apostles on the Great Commission, sent to all nations with the Gospel (Matthew 28:19-20). Paul preached Christ Crucified, the Wisdom of God, in every city (1 Corinthians 1:23-24).

Sons of man – Notice “sons of man”—sons of Adam in Hebrew. God’s chosen are destined to shine His wisdom worldwide (Isaiah 42:6). Since Christ, who’s led the charge? The Christian West—Europe and America—printing Bibles, raising teachers, spreading the Word globally. Not by accident, for Wisdom is known by her children (Matthew 11:19).

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. -Proverbs 8:5-6

O ye simple fools: God’s longsuffering, yearning for all to repent and escape the second death (2 Peter 3:9). That’s why Wisdom pleads with the simple and fools—she wants to save them! Do you see who she is? She is not really a woman, that’s just a metaphor portraying Wisdom’s purity and love. Wisdom is Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God incarnate, the Word made flesh (John 1:14)!

Excellent things: Wisdom’s not confined to Proverbs; she speaks through every page of Scripture, Genesis to Revelation. Jesus declared, “Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me” (Psalm 40:7; Hebrews 10:7). Don’t ignore her call.

Wisdom’s Truth vs. Deception (7-9)

For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. –Proverbs 8:7-9

Speak truth: Wisdom speaks only truth, unlike the Proverbs 7 woman’s flattery, seduction, and deception. This divides a faithful church from an apostate one. True churches proclaim truth and righteousness, urging us to overcome sin. Apostate churches avoid sin, preaching only grace, mercy, and love, claiming Jesus did it all—no need to strive as overcomers. That’s a lie! God’s law is to be written on our hearts and we should be striving to become more like Christ everyday, rejecting and overcoming sin (Hebrews 8:10; Revelation 2:7).

Plain to him that understandeth: To those who seek understanding, God’s law is clear: sin brings harm, while obedience yields joy. Yet fools dismiss wisdom as unattainable, complaining that God’s law is unjust. Choose wisdom over folly.

The Value of Wisdom (8-11)

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. -Proverbs 8:10-11

Better than rubies: Nothing in this world or the next compares to Wisdom’s value. You can have her now—just listen! Stop chasing worldly riches and seize Christ’s truth.

I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. -Proverbs 8:12-13

Witty inventions: Wisdom brings prudence and sharp discernment, exposing deceptive schemes. With her, you’ll spot apostate churches quickly, guarding your soul from harm. She reveals intentions and helps you recognize patterns of deception.

Hate evil: True fear of God means hating pride, arrogance, and perverse speech. Tolerate these, and you’re a fool, blind to Wisdom’s fruits!

Wisdom’s Authority and Counsel (14-16)

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. -Proverbs 8:14-16

Counsel is mine: Forget worldly counselors and their empty words. Wisdom’s counsel is free through prayer and seeking Christ!

By me kings reign: Good kings ruled by God’s law, handwriting it to guide them (Deuteronomy 17:18-19). You’re now a king and priest in God’s kingdom (Revelation 1:6)—seek Wisdom to rule righteously.

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. -Proverbs 8:17-19

I love them: Wisdom loves those who love her. Do you hunger for God’s Word, studying chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse, or only half-way love her when it’s convenient? Make Wisdom your priority!

Durable riches: Wisdom’s fruits—righteousness, honor, joy—can’t be stolen or lost. Solomon sought Wisdom first and gained unimaginable wealth (1 Kings 3:11-13). Chase riches over Wisdom, and you’ll never know true joy.

5 Ways to Seek Wisdom’s Durable Riches in Proverbs 8

  • Study Daily: Commit to reading one chapter of the Bible daily to hear Wisdom’s voice.
  • Pray for Discernment: Ask God to reveal truth and expose deceptive teachings.
  • Reject Pride: Hate evil, including pride and arrogance, as Wisdom commands (Proverbs 8:13).
  • Prioritize Christ: Choose Jesus, the Wisdom of God, over worldly riches every day.
  • Test Teachings: Verify sermons against Scripture to avoid apostate doctrines (Acts 17:11).

Wisdom’s Righteous Path (20-21)

Path symbolizing Wisdom in the Bible from Proverbs 8 with Way of Righteousness text, leading to truth.
Proverbs 8: A path symbolizing Wisdom’s Way of Righteousness.

I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. -Proverbs 8:20-21

Paths of judgment: Wisdom leads you to righteousness and sound judgment, applying biblical principles. That demands diligent study of God’s Word.

Inherit substance: Love Wisdom, and she’ll bring spiritual and material abundance. Love wealth instead, and you may end up with nothing!

Wisdom’s Eternal Nature (22-27)

The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: -Proverbs 8:22-27

From everlasting: Wisdom’s eternal, with God before creation. John 1 confirms: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God” (John 1:1). Jesus is Wisdom incarnate, a truth hidden in the Old Testament, likely taught by Christ post-resurrection (Luke 24:27).

Wisdom’s Role in Creation (28-31)

When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. -Proverbs 8:28-31

I was daily his delight: These words bring to mind the Father’s bold statement, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear Him.” Jesus, full of God’s wisdom, wasn’t just with God from the start—He was the joy of the Father’s heart every single day. Think about the wonder of creation, and it hits you: only someone who loves wisdom could shape the world like God did—from the endless stars in the sky to the tiniest speck of dust. A brilliant mind, thrilled by it all, is behind everything, and Jesus was right there, God’s wisdom in action, building the world with joy and purpose.

My delights were with the sons of men: God delighted in wisdom, and wisdom, through Jesus, delighted in the sons of Adam. Jesus was present when mankind was made, gazing with joy upon humanity as God’s unique creation, formed in His image with the capacity for love, fellowship, and purpose. This delight in mankind, so precious to Him from the moment of our creation, filled Jesus with a profound love for us. Is it any wonder that this same love—rooted in His joy at our making—compelled Jesus to sacrifice Himself for us? His delight in humanity’s potential and His longing to restore us to the Father’s design drove Him to the cross, revealing a love for mankind that began at creation and endured to redemption.

Jesus’ delight in mankind at creation fueled His enduring love, compelling Him to the cross thousands of years later to save us.”

Wisdom’s Final Appeal (32-34)

Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. -Proverbs 8:32-34

Hearken unto me: Wisdom—Jesus—commands you to keep His ways for blessings!

Daily at my gates: Not weekly, daily. Christianity’s a seven-day faith! Seek Wisdom every day in God’s Word, not just Sundays.

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death. -Proverbs 8:35-36

Finds life: Jesus, the Wisdom of God, is the only way to eternal life (John 14:6). Reject Him, and you wrong your own soul. Hate Wisdom, and you love death!

Do you love life or death? Embrace Wisdom to find Christ’s truth and righteousness!
